Research overview
Somatostatin is a natural hormone, mainly the 14-amino-acid form called somatostatin-14, produced in the hypothalamus, pancreatic delta cells and gut. It is a broad 'off switch' for hormone release, inhibiting growth hormone, insulin, glucagon, gastrin and many gut secretions through five receptors, SSTR1 to 5. Its half-life is only one to three minutes, which is why long-acting analogues such as octreotide were developed. The native peptide is still used in research, and as an infusion in some countries for variceal bleeding.
Substantial controlled clinical research or late stage development has been identified; this is not a product authorisation claim.
Questions about Somatostatin Acetate
PRODUCT QUESTIONSWhat is Somatostatin Acetate?
Somatostatin Acetate is the acetate salt of somatostatin 14, a 14 residue peptide closed by a disulfide bond between cysteines at positions 3 and 14. It binds all five somatostatin receptor subtypes.
What research has been published on Somatostatin Acetate?
Somatostatin is a reference agonist for studying the five receptor subtypes and the control of pituitary, pancreatic and gut hormone release. Clinical studies used infusions to reduce portal pressure in variceal bleeding and to reduce pancreatic secretion. Its pharmacology underpins all later analogues.
What batch documentation should accompany Somatostatin Acetate?
Somatostatin Acetate: Ask for the COA and analytical reports for the batch being quoted. Ask for mass spectrometry confirming the disulfide, HPLC purity that separates the reduced and dimer forms, peptide content and acetate content.
How should Somatostatin Acetate storage conditions be assessed?
Store Somatostatin Acetate lyophilised at −20°C or 2°C to 8°C, away from light. It degrades quickly in plasma and slowly in buffer, so prepare solutions fresh and keep them cold.
