Secretin Acetate

Authorised product

Endogenous peptide hormone (secretin)

Research material. Not for human or animal consumption.

Research overview

Secretin was the first hormone ever identified, by Bayliss and Starling in 1902. This 27-amino-acid peptide is released by the duodenum when acid arrives from the stomach and tells the pancreas to secrete bicarbonate-rich fluid. Synthetic human and porcine secretin are used diagnostically: to test exocrine pancreatic function, to help diagnose gastrinoma through a paradoxical rise in gastrin, and to improve pancreatic duct images during secretin-enhanced MRCP.

Questions about Secretin Acetate

PRODUCT QUESTIONS
What is Secretin Acetate?

Secretin Acetate is the acetate salt of a 27 residue peptide hormone with an amidated C terminus. It is the founding member of the secretin, glucagon and vasoactive intestinal peptide family.

What research has been published on Secretin Acetate?

Clinical research concerns diagnostic stimulation: measuring bicarbonate output in pancreatic function tests, gastrin responses in suspected gastrinoma and duct visualisation in MRCP. Mechanistic studies examine secretin receptor signalling in the pancreas, bile ducts and brain. Trials in autism during the late 1990s did not show benefit.

What batch documentation should accompany Secretin Acetate?

Secretin Acetate: Ask for the COA and analytical reports for the batch being quoted. The certificate should state whether the sequence is human or porcine, with mass spectrometry, HPLC purity, peptide content and, ideally, a biological potency figure.

How should Secretin Acetate storage conditions be assessed?

Store Secretin Acetate frozen at −20°C, dry and protected from light. It loses activity quickly in solution, so reconstitute it just before use and discard leftovers.
