Octreotide Acetate

Authorised product

Synthetic somatostatin analogue peptide

Research material. Not for human or animal consumption.

Research overview

Octreotide was the first long-acting somatostatin analogue, approved in 1988 (Sandostatin). This cyclic octapeptide keeps the four residues that somatostatin uses to bind its receptors and adds D-amino acids and a threoninol end, extending its half-life from minutes to about 90 minutes. It mainly targets SSTR2. It is used in acromegaly and to control hormonal symptoms of neuroendocrine tumours, and the PROMID trial showed that its long-acting form slowed midgut tumour growth.

Questions about Octreotide Acetate

PRODUCT QUESTIONS
What is Octreotide Acetate?

Octreotide Acetate is the acetate salt of a cyclic eight residue peptide closed by a disulfide bond. It contains D phenylalanine and D tryptophan and ends in threoninol, an amino alcohol rather than an amino acid.

What research has been published on Octreotide Acetate?

Clinical research spans growth hormone control in acromegaly, diarrhoea and flushing in carcinoid syndrome, the PROMID trial in midgut neuroendocrine tumours, and bleeding from varices. Octreotide is also the scaffold for radiolabelled imaging agents. Oral octreotide capsules were later developed for acromegaly.

What batch documentation should accompany Octreotide Acetate?

Octreotide Acetate: Ask for the COA and analytical reports for the batch being quoted. Ask for mass spectrometry, HPLC purity with the reduced form and dimers reported, chiral purity data and acetate content.

How should Octreotide Acetate storage conditions be assessed?

Store Octreotide Acetate at 2°C to 8°C, protected from light. It is most stable around pH 4, and short periods at room temperature are tolerated by the finished product.
