Melanotan-II / MT2

Early human

Synthetic melanocortin receptor agonist peptide

Research material. Not for human or animal consumption.

Research overview

Melanotan II is a synthetic cyclic heptapeptide analogue of alpha-melanocyte-stimulating hormone (α-MSH), developed at the University of Arizona in the late 1980s. It activates several melanocortin receptors without selectivity: MC1R in pigment cells, which darkens skin, and MC3R and MC4R in the brain, which affect appetite and sexual function. Human data are very small, and it is not authorised anywhere. Regulators, including the UK MHRA, have warned against unlicensed products sold for tanning.

Questions about Melanotan-II / MT2

PRODUCT QUESTIONS
What is Melanotan-II / MT2?

Melanotan-II / MT2 is a cyclic seven residue lactam peptide based on the core of alpha melanocyte stimulating hormone. Its ring is formed by an amide bond between aspartic acid and lysine side chains rather than a disulfide.

What research has been published on Melanotan-II / MT2?

Published human evidence is limited to a three participant Phase I pilot reporting skin darkening with nausea and other side effects, and a 20 participant erectile dysfunction study reporting responses alongside frequent nausea and yawning. Its metabolite and close relative bremelanotide was developed separately. Case reports describe changes in moles and other adverse events with unlicensed use.

What batch documentation should accompany Melanotan-II / MT2?

Melanotan-II / MT2: Ask for the COA and analytical reports for the batch being quoted. Ask for mass spectrometry confirming the lactam ring, HPLC purity with the linear precursor reported, chiral purity for the D phenylalanine and acetate content.

How should Melanotan-II / MT2 storage conditions be assessed?

Store lyophilised Melanotan II at −20°C, sealed and protected from light. The lactam ring is chemically stable, but solutions should be refrigerated and used within a short, defined period.
