Carbetocin Acetate

Authorised product

Synthetic oxytocin analogue peptide

Research material. Not for human or animal consumption.

Research overview

Carbetocin is a long-acting synthetic analogue of oxytocin. Changes to the molecule, including replacing the disulfide bridge with a more stable thioether, give it a much longer action on uterine oxytocin receptors. Its main use is preventing postpartum haemorrhage after delivery. The WHO CHAMPION trial, with almost 30,000 women, found a heat-stable carbetocin formulation non-inferior to oxytocin, which matters where cold-chain storage is unreliable.

Questions about Carbetocin Acetate

PRODUCT QUESTIONS
What is Carbetocin Acetate?

Carbetocin Acetate is the acetate salt of a nine residue oxytocin analogue. The N terminal amine is removed, the tyrosine is methylated and the ring is closed by a carbon sulfur bond in place of oxytocin's disulfide.

What research has been published on Carbetocin Acetate?

Clinical research focuses on prevention of excessive bleeding after caesarean and vaginal birth. The CHAMPION trial compared heat stable carbetocin with oxytocin for blood loss, and other trials measured uterine tone and the need for extra uterotonic drugs. Formulation work studied stability at high temperature and humidity.

What batch documentation should accompany Carbetocin Acetate?

Carbetocin Acetate: Ask for the COA and analytical reports for the batch being quoted. Look for mass spectrometry confirming the thioether ring, HPLC purity with known degradation products, and acetate and water content.

How should Carbetocin Acetate storage conditions be assessed?

Carbetocin Acetate is more heat stable than oxytocin, but research material should still be kept dry and refrigerated at 2°C to 8°C, protected from light, unless the batch documentation states otherwise.
