Cyclic heptapeptide GPIIb/IIIa antagonist

Research material. Not for human or animal consumption.

Research overview

Eptifibatide (Integrilin) is a cyclic heptapeptide that blocks glycoprotein IIb/IIIa, the platelet integrin that binds fibrinogen and links platelets into a clot. Its design came from barbourin, a protein in the venom of the southeastern pygmy rattlesnake that carries a KGD motif selective for this integrin. Given intravenously, eptifibatide was studied in acute coronary syndromes and percutaneous coronary intervention. In the PURSUIT trial it reduced death or heart attack at 30 days but increased bleeding.

Questions about Eptifibatide

PRODUCT QUESTIONS
What is Eptifibatide?

Eptifibatide is a cyclic peptide of seven residues, closed by a disulfide bridge between a mercaptopropionyl group and a cysteine. Its homoarginine, glycine, aspartate sequence mimics the integrin binding motif of barbourin.

What research has been published on Eptifibatide?

Large trials such as PURSUIT, ESPRIT and IMPACT II tested eptifibatide in unstable angina, heart attack and coronary stenting, measuring death, heart attack and urgent revascularisation against bleeding. Later trials with modern antiplatelet drugs narrowed its role. Laboratory studies use it as a reference integrin blocker in platelet aggregation assays.

What batch documentation should accompany Eptifibatide?

Eptifibatide: Ask for the COA and analytical reports for the batch being quoted. Ask for mass spectrometry confirming the cyclic disulfide, HPLC purity that separates the linear reduced form, and a platelet aggregation or binding assay if the material is used for functional work.

How should Eptifibatide storage conditions be assessed?

Store Eptifibatide refrigerated at 2°C to 8°C and protected from light. Short periods at room temperature are tolerated by the finished product, but research solutions should be kept cold and used within a defined window.
