Vapreotide Acetate

Late stage

Synthetic somatostatin analogue

Research overview

Vapreotide (RC-160) is a synthetic octapeptide somatostatin analogue developed by Andrew Schally's group. Like octreotide, it acts mainly on SSTR2 and SSTR5 receptors and has a far longer half-life than natural somatostatin. Its main clinical study context was acute oesophageal variceal bleeding in cirrhosis: by reducing splanchnic blood flow and portal pressure, it was tested as an add-on to endoscopic treatment. It also has historical research in neuroendocrine and gastrointestinal hormone suppression.

Questions about Vapreotide Acetate

PRODUCT QUESTIONS
What is Vapreotide Acetate?

Vapreotide Acetate is the acetate salt of an eight residue cyclic peptide modelled on the receptor binding core of somatostatin. It contains D amino acids and is closed by a disulfide bond between two cysteines.

What research has been published on Vapreotide Acetate?

The best known trial gave vapreotide before endoscopy to patients with cirrhosis and acute variceal bleeding and measured bleeding control and survival. Haemodynamic studies measured falls in portal and variceal pressure. Earlier experimental work explored suppression of growth hormone and gastrointestinal hormones.

What batch documentation should accompany Vapreotide Acetate?

Vapreotide Acetate: Ask for the COA and analytical reports for the batch being quoted. Ask for mass spectrometry confirming the oxidised, disulfide bonded form, HPLC purity that separates the reduced peptide and dimers, and the acetate content.

How should Vapreotide Acetate storage conditions be assessed?

Store Vapreotide Acetate lyophilised at 2°C to 8°C or −20°C in a sealed vial, protected from light. In solution the disulfide is most stable at slightly acidic pH and low temperature.
