Semax Acetate

Early human

Synthetic neuropeptide analogue

Research material. Not for human or animal consumption.

Research overview

Semax is a synthetic heptapeptide, Met-Glu-His-Phe-Pro-Gly-Pro, combining the ACTH(4-7) fragment with a Pro-Gly-Pro tail that slows breakdown. Developed in Moscow, it is registered in Russia as a nasal spray for stroke recovery and some cognitive disorders. It has no hormonal activity on the adrenal glands. Animal and cell studies describe increased BDNF and other neurotrophic factors and changes in immune and vascular gene expression after brain ischaemia. Human evidence comes mainly from Russian clinical studies.

EVIDENCE LEVEL Early human

Limited, exploratory, early phase or small human studies have been identified.

Questions about Semax Acetate

PRODUCT QUESTIONS
What is Semax Acetate?

Semax Acetate is the acetate salt of a seven residue peptide made of ACTH residues 4 to 7, methionine, glutamic acid, histidine, phenylalanine, followed by proline, glycine, proline. It does not act on the adrenal cortex.

What research has been published on Semax Acetate?

Research focuses on neuroprotection in stroke models, gene expression changes in brain tissue after ischaemia, BDNF signalling and attention and memory in animals. Russian clinical studies examined recovery after stroke, but larger independent trials are lacking.

What batch documentation should accompany Semax Acetate?

Semax Acetate: Ask for the COA and analytical reports for the batch being quoted. Ask for mass spectrometry, HPLC purity with the methionine sulfoxide form reported, peptide content and acetate content.

How should Semax Acetate storage conditions be assessed?

Store Semax Acetate lyophilised at −20°C or 2°C to 8°C, protected from light. Its N terminal methionine oxidises in air, so keep vials sealed and solutions cold.
