Synthetic somatostatin analogue peptide

Research material. Not for human or animal consumption.

Research overview

Lanreotide is a cyclic octapeptide somatostatin analogue acting mainly on SSTR2 and SSTR5. A distinctive feature is that, at high concentration in water, it assembles into nanotubes that form a gel. This lets the Autogel depot release it slowly without polymers, allowing monthly injections. Lanreotide is authorised for acromegaly and for gastroenteropancreatic neuroendocrine tumours, where the CLARINET trial showed longer progression-free survival than placebo, and for carcinoid syndrome symptoms.

Questions about Lanreotide

PRODUCT QUESTIONS
What is Lanreotide?

Lanreotide is a cyclic eight residue peptide containing a naphthylalanine and a D tryptophan, closed by a disulfide bond. Its self assembly into nanotubes underlies its depot formulation.

What research has been published on Lanreotide?

Clinical research covers growth hormone and IGF 1 control in acromegaly, the CLARINET trial in nonfunctioning enteropancreatic neuroendocrine tumours, and diarrhoea and flushing in carcinoid syndrome. Materials science groups also study it as a model of peptide self assembly.

What batch documentation should accompany Lanreotide?

Lanreotide: Ask for the COA and analytical reports for the batch being quoted. Ask for mass spectrometry, HPLC purity with reduced and dimer forms reported, and acetate content, since the salt ratio affects the gel forming behaviour.

How should Lanreotide storage conditions be assessed?

Store Lanreotide at 2°C to 8°C, protected from light. Concentrated solutions may gel as the peptide self assembles, so prepare dilute solutions for analytical work.
