Authorised product

Mitochondria targeting synthetic tetrapeptide

Research material. Not for human or animal consumption.

Research overview

Elamipretide, also known as SS-31 or Bendavia, is the tetrapeptide D-Arg-Dmt-Lys-Phe-NH2, developed by Hazel Szeto and Peter Schiller. It alternates positively charged and aromatic residues, which lets it cross cell membranes and concentrate on the inner mitochondrial membrane, where it binds cardiolipin. This is thought to stabilise the membrane and improve energy production. FDA granted accelerated approval to a defined product for Barth syndrome in 2025, while broader programmes in mitochondrial myopathy and heart failure did not meet key endpoints.

EVIDENCE LEVEL Authorised product

Questions about Elamipretide

PRODUCT QUESTIONS
What is Elamipretide?

Elamipretide is a synthetic mitochondria targeting tetrapeptide used in research on mitochondrial function and related disorders, including preclinical and clinical studies.

What research has been published on Elamipretide?

Elamipretide is a mitochondria targeting synthetic tetrapeptide that binds cardiolipin in the inner mitochondrial membrane. FDA granted accelerated approval to defined Forzinity product(s) for improving muscle strength in adults and children weighing at least 30 kg with Barth syndrome; this narrow decision relies on a surrogate endpoint and requires confirmatory evidence. Broader primary mitochondrial myopathy and heart failure programmes remain investigational, with key randomised studies not showing benefit on their primary endpoints. This does not establish authorisation or equivalence for a catalogue material.

What batch documentation should accompany Elamipretide?

Elamipretide: Ask for the COA and analytical reports for the batch being quoted. Ask for mass spectrometry, HPLC purity, chiral purity for the D arginine and the counterion content, as both acetate and hydrochloride salts exist.

How should Elamipretide storage conditions be assessed?

Store Elamipretide dry at 2°C to 8°C or −20°C, protected from light. The short peptide is relatively stable, but its dimethyltyrosine can oxidise over time in solution.
